66-Year-Old Man Remanded Over Fatal Walworth Knife Attack
A 66-year-old man accused of a deadly knife attack at East Street Market in Walworth, southeast London, has been remanded in custody following a tense court hearing. Musse Ali, who has no fixed address, faces charges including murder, two counts of attempted murder, and possession of a knife.
Tragedy Strikes Days Before Remembrance Sunday
The brutal attack happened just before the two-minute silence on Remembrance Sunday, sparking chaos as terrified shoppers fled. Local pensioner Hilkiah McLeggan, 77, was tragically killed at the scene. Two other men, Ho Man Yau and Baheru Nadew Bartura, suffered serious injuries, with one still in critical condition.
Suspect Held by Brave Market Traders
Ali appeared at Croydon Magistrates’ Court, where he confirmed his name with the help of a Somali interpreter. The historic East Street Market, famed since the 16th century for fresh produce and goods, was the terrifying backdrop for the attack.
Metropolitan Police confirmed the incident was not terror-related and urged the public to avoid speculation. Authorities commended “brave members of the public who assisted police at the scene,” with reports that market traders courageously restrained Ali until officers arrived.
Next Steps: Old Bailey Trial Looms
Dressed in a grey tracksuit, Ali stood silently as District Judge Nigel McLean formally sent him to the Central Criminal Court for trial. “The charges you face can only be tried in Crown Court,” the judge told him.
Ali has been remanded in custody ahead of a bail hearing at the Old Bailey on Wednesday. A plea hearing is set for December 10.
