Vandals Deface Grade I Listed Church in Sawbridgeworth

Police are hunting for culprits after Great St Mary’s Church in Sawbridgeworth was targeted by vandals.

Offenders Ruin Fresh Lime Render with Offensive Graffiti

The damage occurred between noon on Tuesday, 7 June, and 4.50pm on Thursday, 9 June. As the freshly applied lime render dried on the church’s side wall, offenders scrawled offensive messages into the wet surface. They also kicked the render, leaving noticeable footprints.

Community Outraged Over Disrespectful Attack

“This behaviour is completely unacceptable and has, understandably, caused a great deal of upset among the local community,” said PCSO Amanda Higham of the Safer Neighbourhood Team.

Great St Mary’s Church isn’t just any building—it’s Sawbridgeworth’s only Grade I listed building and a consecrated place of worship. Police urge anyone with information to come forward and help catch those responsible.
