Massive Blaze Erupts at Former Debenhams in Canterbury

Over 40 firefighters are battling a huge fire that broke out at the old Debenhams building in Canterbury city centre tonight. Emergency crews raced to the scene just after 8:45pm on Monday, December 2, after reports of flames spreading through the historic site.

Major Fire Response Deployed

What started with five fire engines quickly escalated as the fire intensified. Specialist units, including the Technical Rescue Unit and Urban Search and Rescue teams, were scrambled to support the fight against the inferno.

Fire crews are using cutting-edge tech to tackle the blaze. Drones equipped with thermal imaging are scanning the scene, while heavy-duty Merlo machinery helps remove debris and aid firefighters on the ground.

“We currently have five fire engines, two height vehicles, and over 40 firefighters tackling the blaze. We are urging residents to keep their windows and doors closed due to the large amount of smoke in the area,” confirmed a Kent Fire and Rescue spokesperson.

Safety Warnings and Travel Chaos

Smoke from the fire has shrouded parts of Canterbury’s High Street, prompting warnings for locals and businesses to steer clear of the area. Residents are urged to keep windows and doors shut to avoid the thick, choking smoke.

The blaze has caused serious disruption across the city centre with road closures in place. Emergency services warn members of the public to stay away to allow firefighters to work without interference.

Fire Investigation to Begin

The cause of the fire remains unknown. Kent Fire and Rescue Service will launch an investigation once the blaze is fully extinguished. Authorities are appealing to anyone with information or footage to come forward and assist with inquiries.
