Firefighters have now fully extinguished a large blaze which broke out at a farm in Meresborough Road, Rainham, on Sunday evening (17 August).

At the height of the incident, six fire engines and a bulk water carrier were deployed after a large number of apple crates caught fire, sending thick plumes of smoke across the Medway area.

Residents were initially advised to keep windows and doors closed as a precaution due to smoke.

Fire contained

Kent Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that crews used high-pressure hose reel jets to bring the flames under control and prevent the fire spreading to other parts of the farm.

By 10.30pm on Sunday, the incident had been scaled back to a single fire engine, with firefighters maintaining a watching brief overnight to damp down hotspots.

A final update issued at 10.45am on Monday, 18 August confirmed that the blaze was fully out and the incident closed.

Police support

Kent Police assisted at the scene during the height of the response, helping to keep the area secure while firefighting operations continued.

A fire service spokesperson said:

“Crews worked hard to contain the fire and prevent further spread. We’d like to thank residents for their patience while the incident was dealt with.”

No injuries have been reported.
