Chaos at Moldova Airport: Gunman Kills Two, Injures One

A shocking shooting at Moldova’s main airport left two security officers dead and a civilian injured on Friday. The 43-year-old attacker, reportedly from Tajikistan, opened fire after being denied entry into the country. Police swiftly wounded and arrested him, but not before causing panic and disrupting flights at Chisinau International Airport.

‘Terrorist Act’ Under Investigation

Moldova’s acting chief prosecutor, Ion Munteanu, called the shooting a suspected “terrorist” attack. While authorities have not found links to any armed groups, they haven’t ruled out the involvement of accomplices.

“We are exploring all angles, but so far no evidence connects the gunman to organised groups,” Munteanu said.

Eyewitnesses Describe Horror and Evacuation

Olena Shevelyova, a Ukrainian passenger waiting for a flight to Milan, told how terrified travellers were evacuated without explanation. Minutes later, gunshots rang out, forcing people to take cover behind technical buildings on the runway.

“We didn’t know what was happening at first. It was only after we were far away from the airport that officials told us about the shooting,” said Shevelyova.

Tragic Details and Political Fallout

  • Prime Minister Dorin Recean revealed the gunman stole a weapon from a border guard as he was being escorted for deportation.
  • The two victims were identified as a border police officer and an airport security guard.
  • President Maia Sandu issued heartfelt condolences to the families of the slain officers.
  • The gunman arrived in Moldova from Istanbul holding a Tajikistan passport and became agitated during questioning.

Moldova, a nation of 2.6 million seeking EU membership, has seen increased airport traffic from neighbouring Ukraine, especially since Russia’s invasion in 2022.

The Interior Ministry is working to restore order amid ongoing disruptions at Chisinau International Airport. The full impact on flights remains unclear.
