FBU Legend Helen Harrison Passes, Leaving a Lasting Legacy
Champion of Firefighters and Women’s Rights
Helen Harrison was a towering figure in the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) and the wider labour movement. Known for her unwavering support for new union leaders and fierce commitment to fighting for workers’ rights, Helen inspired countless colleagues throughout her career.
From Firefighter to National Leader
Helen joined Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service in 1982 and climbed the ranks to become Group Manager before retiring in 2015. She entered the FBU National Women’s Committee as a West Midlands rep in 1999 and quickly established herself as one of the most reliable, knowledgeable, and forward-thinking officials in the union.
A Powerful Voice for Women in the Fire Service
The respect she earned from women members led to her election as national Chair of the FBU Women’s Section. Helen gave women an unequivocal and highly respected voice within the Fire & Rescue Service, pioneering policies that improved working lives across the UK fire service for good.
Remembered for Her Spirit and Solidarity
Helen’s humour, support, and comradeship will be fondly remembered. She leaves behind a stronger union and better fire service. “On behalf of all our members, we thank her for that,” the South West FBU said.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to her husband Ian, family, friends, comrades, and sisters during this sad time. Sororally, South West FBU.
