Nottingham’s Old Market Square Shut for Shocking Emergency Demo
Nottingham’s Old Market Square was closed on Easter Saturday for a gripping live demonstration by emergency services, showing exactly what goes down when they respond to a crash.
Real Deal Rescue: Cutting Cars to Save Lives
Emergency teams put on a jaw-dropping display. Firefighters and paramedics dismantled a vehicle to free a stranded casualty, revealing the life-saving work behind the scenes.
- Nottinghamshire Police, Fire and Rescue, and East Midlands Ambulance Service all took part.
- Sergeant Shakeel Rasul said the event aimed to highlight the deadly risks of drink and drug driving.
- “It was a huge success, helped by brilliant weather that drew big crowds,” Rasul added.
First-Ever Council-Greenlit Event
For the first time, Nottingham City Council gave the nod to this impactful event, reflecting the hard work by all partners to raise awareness.
Station Manager Dan Palmer of Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue explained: “Fighting fires is just part of what we do. We also respond to crashes – many caused by drink or drug driving.”
“Thanks to everyone who watched how we cut people out of wrecked cars and learned about the dangers of driving under the influence,” Palmer said.
CPR Saves Lives – Ambulance Service Urges Action
Dom Judge, Community First Responder officer with East Midlands Ambulance, demonstrated CPR and emergency care on the ‘casualty’.
“If someone has a cardiac arrest, their chance of survival skyrockets if CPR starts immediately,” Judge said.
“Using a defibrillator quickly gives the best shot at survival. We’re urging businesses and communities to install Public Access Defibrillators to save lives.”
‘Deadly Mix’ Campaign Targets Drink-Driving Crisis
This eye-opening demo was part of Nottinghamshire Police’s Deadly Mix campaign.
- Between 2018 and 2020, 263 suffered injury or death in drink-related crashes here.
- The campaign handed out 2,000+ posters and 5,000 beermats to pubs countywide.
- Warnings also hit the backs of Nottingham City Transport buses to scare off drinkers from driving.
- A public event in Trinity Square brought emergency teams face-to-face with locals to drive home the dangers.
Nottingham’s emergency services made it clear: drink or drug driving isn’t just reckless – it’s deadly. They’re urging everyone to think twice before getting behind the wheel.
