US Intelligence Worker Stabbed in Cheltenham Terror Attack
A woman linked to US intelligence was brutally knifed outside a Cheltenham leisure centre in what police are treating as a terror attack.
Attack Unfolded in Leisure Centre Car Park
The victim was sitting in her car at around 9.15pm on Thursday when the attacker struck. Despite being seriously wounded, she managed to stumble out of the vehicle and alert staff before the centre closed. After emergency surgery, she remains in stable condition in hospital.
Police arrested a 29-year-old Cheltenham man at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder. Within 24 hours, he was re-arrested on terror charges including preparing and instigating a terrorist act. Officers have since searched a property linked to the suspect.
Targeting a US Spy Close to GCHQ
The victim is an American intelligence operative seconded to Britain’s GCHQ, located just three miles from the attack site. While details about her role remain secret, GCHQ works closely with the US National Security Agency, sharing vital counter-terrorism intelligence.
The stabbing is being taken very seriously by counter-terror teams, with police describing “specific details” that escalated the case into a terrorism investigation.
Locals Shocked as Mystery Unfolds
Neighbours say the victim and suspect were seen arguing in the car moments before the stabbing. “They were either parked or just pulled into the car park when she was stabbed,” said one local. “She got out and ran to the leisure centre for help.”
Many residents are puzzled by the terror link. One local woman said: “It’s usually so quiet here. The police didn’t come to talk to us – maybe they knew something beforehand.” Council official Stephan Fifield added: “There’s rarely anything to do with terrorism in this area. The leisure centre was closing at the time, so it’s unusual for anyone to be there.”
Police Reassure Public as Investigation Continues
Assistant Chief Constable Richard Ocone of Gloucestershire Constabulary said: “We believe this was an isolated incident and are not aware of any wider threat. We are working closely with Counter Terrorism Policing and urge anyone with information to contact us via 101.”
GCHQ declined to comment on the incident.
