Christmas Channel Crisis: 68 Migrants Rescued in Overnight Drama

Thirty-five migrants were rescued from dinghies in the English Channel in the early hours of Christmas Day, with a further rescue by the RNLI Dover lifeboat adding to the toll. Among those plucked from the stormy waters were Iraqi, Iranian, and Afghan nationals — including very young children battling heavy rain and freezing conditions.

Babies Cry as Cold and Chaos Hit Migrants

A baby girl’s desperate screams were reported as she arrived on UK shores in Dover, Kent, around midnight on Christmas morning. In total, 68 people made it to the UK after the perilous Channel crossings, with a second child among 35 migrants found on a dinghy near the Dunkirk and Calais ferry routes shortly before midnight.

All rescued migrants received medical checks, with adults handed over to immigration officials for interviews. Vulnerable children have been placed under the care of social services.

More Migrants Saved After Broken Down Vessel in French Waters

In a separate incident in French waters, nine migrants were rescued after their vessel’s engine failed. They have since been transferred to the UK Coastguard for assessment. Border Force, working alongside the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, responded to several migrant crossings overnight and on Christmas morning.

Crackdown On Criminal Gangs Behind Deadly Channel Crossings

Authorities warn that organised crime gangs fuel these illegal crossings, exploiting vulnerable migrants for profit. The Home Office says it is collaborating closely with French law enforcement to target and dismantle these dangerous networks.

The recent Christmas Day rescues come after a brutal year marked by a record number of Channel crossings and the tragic loss of 27 lives, which remains under investigation.

Justice Minister Tom Pursglove said: “Seeking asylum for protection should not involve people asylum shopping country to country or risking their lives by lining the pockets of criminal gangs to cross the Channel. They should claim asylum in the first safe country they reach.

This Government is reforming our approach to illegal entry to the UK and asylum by making the tough decisions to end the overt exploitation of our laws and UK taxpayers. The public have been crying out for reform for two decades and that’s what this Government is delivering through our New Plan for Immigration.

The Nationality and Borders Bill will make it a criminal offence to knowingly arrive in the UK illegally and introduce life sentences for those who facilitate illegal entry into the country. It will also strengthen the powers of Border Force to stop and redirect vessels, while introducing new powers to remove asylum seekers to have their claims processed outside the UK.

MPs have already voted to reform this broken and abusive system and the sooner the House of Lords approves the Borders Bill, the sooner these reforms can be delivered.”

Channel Crossings Show No Sign of Letting Up

On Christmas Day alone, UK authorities rescued or intercepted 67 migrants from two separate incidents, while French officials stopped another crossing attempt. The total number prevented from reaching the UK remains unclear as efforts continue to curb this dangerous and illegal trade across the Channel.
