Newham Charity Shutdown After Scandalous Mismanagement
The Charity Commission has slammed Newham Community Leisure Trust for “serious misconduct and mismanagement” over many years. The charity is now wound up, and one trustee has been banned from charity work for 12 years.
Trustees Failed to Manage Conflicts of Interest
The watchdog’s latest inquiry revealed that a trustee, also chief executive of a local football club, failed to properly manage conflicts of interest between the charity and the club. The football club used the charity-owned football ground, but trustees offered no proof the deal was in the charity’s best interests.
Debts Spiral to Over £200,000
Newham Community Leisure Trust borrowed heavily for more than ten years to maintain the football ground, racking up over £200,000 in loans. Shockingly, trustee meeting minutes show no serious discussion on whether these loans served the charity’s goals or how they’d be repaid.
Set up in 1992 to provide sports facilities for Newham residents, the charity already faced criticism in a 2003 inquiry for failing to carry out meaningful activities and risking conflicts with the football club. Despite that warning, nothing improved.
Charity Removed from Register – Liquidation Continues
The charity was officially removed from the register in February 2023 after its financial collapse. Its liquidation is still ongoing.
Amy Spiller, Head of Investigations at the Charity Commission, said:
“The public rightly expects trustees to act in the best interests of their charity and advance its aims. Where conflicts of interest exist, they must be declared and managed so the charity stays on track.”
“The trustees of Newham Community Leisure Trust let the charity pile up debts without evidence these served its purposes, leading to its downfall.”
“It’s right one trustee has been disqualified for 12 years for their role in this mismanagement.”
