Man Arrested After Stolen Car Crashes into Cyclist and Vehicle in Lewisham

A man was arrested in Lewisham after a high-speed chase ended in chaos. The stolen car he was driving ran a red light, smashed into a cyclist and another car, then mounted the pavement. Police later found two sawn-off shotguns inside the vehicle.

Road Rage and Drama on Bromley Road

At around 4.30pm on Thursday, 23 July, Met officers from the Roads and Transport Policing Command (RTPC) were passing the Bromley Road and Bellingham Road junction when they spotted the reckless driver run the red light.

The crash caused havoc, and several suspects jumped out and fled on foot. A quick-thinking member of the public stopped one man, who was then arrested by officers at the scene. Despite a big search, the others got away – but enquiries are ongoing.

Off-Duty Cop Spots Guns and Secures Scene

An off-duty officer from the Met’s South East command happened to see the drama unfold. Noticing the firearms inside the car, he stood guard until backup arrived. Police found two sawn-off shotguns plus loose cartridges in the stolen vehicle.

The cyclist was rushed to a south London hospital with injuries described as serious but not life-threatening or life-changing.

Police Vow to Hunt Down All Suspects

A 22-year-old man is in custody, facing firearms, weapons, and traffic offence charges. Detective Superintendent Nick Blackburn of the Met’s Specialist Crime South said:

“Those responsible left a trail of destruction and caused serious injury to a cyclist. We have a dedicated team working tirelessly to find the other suspects and hold them to account.
