Migrant Dies After Attempting English Channel Crossing on Tyre Inner Tube
Tragedy on the Channel: Man Dies in Makeshift Craft
A migrant has died during a desperate bid to cross the English Channel on a tyre inner tube, French authorities confirmed. The harrowing incident unfolded early Wednesday morning in the Pas-de-Calais region.
Rescue teams were alerted after a group tried to launch the improvised flotation device into the sea. When French vessels arrived, they found two people in the water — one in cardiac arrest and the other suffering hypothermia.
Despite heroic efforts, the man in cardiac arrest was pronounced dead at the scene. Both survivors were rushed ashore to Boulogne, where the second migrant is still receiving medical care.
Nearly 120 Migrants Reach UK as Small Boats Brave Channel
In a rare break in the weather, nearly 120 migrants managed to land on British shores today. Several small boats crossed the perilous waters, with the UK Border Force assisting arrivals along the southern coast.
French maritime authorities revealed they are tracking three more small boats in French waters heading towards the UK.
These sightings come after more than a week without landings. A recent surge saw nearly 2,300 migrants reach Britain in just ten days.
Smugglers Exploit Weather, Use Dangerous Makeshift Boats
Officials warn that people smugglers prey on weather windows to launch overcrowded, unsafe vessels. They use dinghies, inflatable rafts, and increasingly, tyre inner tubes — putting lives at extreme risk on one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.
French officials call the crossing attempts “increasingly dangerous” as smugglers continue to exploit gaps in patrols and weather patterns.
UK Faces Mounting Pressure to Stop Channel Crossings
The UK government is under fire to crack down on illegal Channel crossings and bust the organised crime gangs profiting from migrant smuggling. With lives lost and desperate migrants risking all, the challenge remains critical and urgent.
