Energy Crisis Looms: MPs Demand Urgent Help for Struggling Households
With winter fast approaching, the UK faces an “inevitable” energy crisis, and MPs on the Energy Security and Net Zero Committee are urging the government to act now. Household energy bills are set to soar, leaving millions under severe financial pressure.
Rising Bills Hit Families Hard Despite Falling Wholesale Prices
Although wholesale energy prices have dropped, many families could pay just as much – or even more – this winter compared to last year. Experts call this “untenable” as standing charges climb and government subsidies vanish.
The committee warns that without urgent support, vulnerable households will struggle to keep the heat on.
Committee Proposes Immediate Cash Help and Discount Extensions
- Ensure families who missed last year’s £400 handout get swift support
- Extend the Warm Home Discount, cutting bills by £150 for eligible households
- Fund pre-winter relief packages to ease the strain before the cold bites
- Scrap daily standing charges so customers pay only for the energy they actually use
Committee Chair Angus Brendan MacNeil said: “The nights are getting darker, and many vulnerable people still carry haunting debts from last winter. One in four are in the red. With this winter set to be even tougher, the government’s delayed support is unacceptable.”
Government Defends Measures but MPs Push for More
A Department for Energy Security and Net Zero spokesperson highlighted ongoing schemes:
- The Energy Price Guarantee, capping costs until April 2025
- The Warm Home Discount helping 3 million vulnerable households
- The £1 billion Great British Insulation Scheme supporting 300,000 families
- New Awaab’s Law to enforce quick repairs by social landlords
But MPs say these steps don’t go far enough. MacNeil stressed: “The tools to help are there. It’s time for the government and energy firms to act fast and reassure struggling families they won’t be abandoned.”
Winter Warning: Immediate Action Needed to Avoid Deepening Energy Crisis
As temperatures drop, calls grow louder for the government to deliver urgent financial relief and policy changes. The clock is ticking to stop millions from choosing between heating or eating this winter.
