Police Crackdown on Street Drinking in Eastbourne This Festive Season
Police have ramped up patrols in Eastbourne town centre to tackle street drinking and anti-social behaviour (ASB) during the busy festive period. Officers are out daily at Bankers Corner throughout December as part of the force’s Op Confront campaign, targeting public safety, crime prevention, and disorder.
Back to Basics Policing to Keep Eastbourne Safe
Neighbourhood Policing Inspector Sarah Taylor warns the town centre is seeing a rise in anti-social gatherings, drinking, and begging. “This will only get worse as pre-Christmas crowds grow,” she said.
“Every year, we boost patrols at this time for public reassurance, focusing on shoplifting and ASB. This year is no different. Our mission is clear: stop crime and keep the town safe.”
Inspector Taylor explained this operation is “back to basics” policing — knowing the community and offenders alike, and engaging early to set clear boundaries.
Protecting Shoppers and the Vulnerable
“We need to be amidst these groups not just to enforce the law, but to engage and spot warning signs early to protect the vulnerable,” Taylor added.
She stressed it’s vital the public feel safe while shopping this Christmas. “Those involved in street life are three times more likely to be victims of crime, often exploited by predatory individuals within their groups.”
So far, the campaign has been a hit, with multiple arrests, vulnerable people housed during cold weather, and Community Protection Warnings issued to offenders.
Powerful Policing Tools Deployed
Over the weekend, a Section 35 dispersal order was enforced in Eastbourne town centre. This lets police move troublemakers on, making it an arrestable offence to return during the order’s duration.
Such powers are just part of the toolkit officers use to nip anti-social behaviour in the bud and protect the community.
