Massive Crash Brings N3 Near Peacevale to a Standstill
Chaos erupted on the N3 near Peacevale this morning after a serious multi-vehicle smash involving around 15 vehicles, including a fully loaded truck. The crash, which happened just after 7.30am on the Pietermaritzburg-bound carriageway, has left the road closed for hours, causing massive traffic disruption.
Emergency Services Battle Chaos and Carnage
ALS Paramedics described the scene as “chaos and carnage.” Multiple ambulances and advanced life support teams rushed to the scene. A triage system was set up instantly to prioritise the 17 injured victims, who suffered injuries ranging from moderate to critical.
One motorist was trapped severely inside his vehicle and had to be rescued using the Jaws of Life by Ethekweni Fire Department crews and Redline Response Rescue. Due to his serious condition, the Netcare911 Aeromedical Helicopter airlifted him to hospital.
Road Closures Cause Massive Delays
The N3 remains closed near Peacevale with wreckage blocking the highway for several hours. Emergency crews are working to clear the scene as motorists face lengthy delays and are being diverted. Injured parties were stabilised on site before transport to various Durban hospitals for urgent treatment.
Investigation Launched as Authorities Seek Witnesses
The cause of the crash remains unknown. Officials from SAPS and the Road Traffic Inspectorate attended the scene and launched an investigation. Police urge any witnesses or drivers with dashcam footage to come forward to help piece together what caused this massive pile-up.
