Isle of Wight Rescue Team Battles Brutal Conditions in Two Dramatic Incidents

Long hours and harsh weather tested rescue crews off the Isle of Wight this week.

Stranded Sailor Nightmare at Scratchels Bay

On Monday 10th November, the Needles Coastguard Rescue Team was scrambled after Needles Coastwatch spotted a stranded sailing vessel off Scratchels Bay.

The rescue was no walk in the park. Scratchels Bay is accessible only by boat or rope—both impossible in savage weather. The team moved to Tennyson’s Rocket Site for a better vantage point.

They discovered a small sailing boat wrecked onshore, surrounded by lifejackets and debris. Fearing someone might be trapped at the cliff base, they called in the big guns: the Daedalus-based Rescue 375 helicopter.

The helicopter carried out a tense aerial search using high-tech cameras. Lifeboats joined, scouring the coast and sea, refuelling multiple times throughout the operation.

Thankfully, no people were found. Investigations revealed the boat had broken free from French moorings, drifting across the Channel and smashing apart on UK shores. The rescue teams stood down after dark, exhausted but relieved.

False Alarm: Fossil Hunters Cut Off by Tide

The very next evening, Tuesday 11th November, the Coastguard was back in action. Reports came in of torchlight near the cliff base and fears of people trapped by the rising tide.

Turned out to be a group of fossil hunters—safe, but caught out by the tide.

The Coastguard stepped in with vital safety advice before the group made their way back without incident.

Crucial Safety Warning for All Coastal Visitors

Always check tide times before heading near the coast! Many accidents happen in fading light or rough weather, putting lives at risk.

If you spot anyone in trouble, call 999 immediately and ask for the Coastguard.
