NHS Summer Gains Under Threat Ahead of Harsh Winter

The NHS Confederation has warned that this summer’s hard-won improvements in NHS performance are in danger of unravelling. As winter looms, rising pressures threaten to reverse progress on cutting waiting times and boosting patient care—unless urgent extra support appears.

Steady But Fragile Progress in NHS Performance

  • The NHS waiting list edged up slightly in July 2024 to 7.62 million, barely higher than June’s figures.
  • More patients are now being admitted, transferred, or discharged from A&E within four hours—76.3% in August versus 75.2% in July.
  • Emergency services saw one of their busiest summers ever, with 2.16 million A&E visits and over half a million emergency admissions in August.

Ambulance response times improved a fraction, with Category 2 calls averaging 27 minutes 25 seconds, beating the 30-minute target, and Category 1 responses slightly faster too.

NHS Faces Budget Crunch and Winter Crisis Risks

Despite these glimmers of hope, Rory Deighton, Director of the NHS Confederation’s Acute Network, cautions the gains are tenuous. He warned, “Without extra funding and resources, the NHS could face a crisis this winter.”

“These figures show how much pressure the NHS is under and how hard staff are working. But patients still wait too long, and progress could be lost if the NHS isn’t properly supported,” Deighton said.

Deighton pointed to the Lord Darzi report highlighting a decade of underinvestment that has stifled NHS productivity. With little growth in funding, managers face tough choices about cutting staff or services—just as demand is set to climb.

Calls for Urgent Government Action

The NHS Confederation calls on the government to commit to significant capital investment that will upgrade NHS estates, boost productivity, and expand care closer to home with a focus on prevention.

“The time for action is now,” Deighton stressed. “The government must provide the support needed to avoid ambulance delays, overwhelmed A&Es, and patients trapped in hospital beds this winter.”

While ministers promise improvements, NHS leaders warn only immediate funding and clear plans can prevent a full-blown winter meltdown for Britain’s beleaguered health service.
