Ofcom Launches Probe After Laurence Fox Sparks 7,300 Complaints on GB News

Massive Backlash Over Laurence Fox’s Jibe on “Dan Wootton Tonight”

Ofcom, the UK’s independent media watchdog, has opened an investigation into the GB News show Dan Wootton Tonight after a storm of 7,300 complaints. The complaints followed controversial remarks made by actor and commentator Laurence Fox about journalist Ava Evans.

During the episode aired on Tuesday, Fox called into question “what self-respecting man” would “climb into bed” with Evans. His punchy and derogatory comments ignited uproar among viewers, sparking calls for action.

Ofcom Acts Under Broadcasting Code Rules

Ofcom confirmed it has launched a formal investigation into the show that aired on September 26, 2023. The probe focuses on Rule 2.3 of the Broadcasting Code, which demands broadcasters justify potentially offensive content by its context.

Dame Melanie Dawes, Ofcom’s Chief Executive, addressed the regulator’s role amid the controversy:

“Over the last few days, there has been speculation and commentary about our role as the independent broadcast regulator. These are important issues, and I wanted to be clear about our rules.”

“Parliament sets objectives on how the broadcast sector should be regulated. We set and enforce rules to achieve these objectives. Contrary to some claims, these rules are essential to our democracy.”

“Our decisions are always based on facts and evidence, taken after a programme airs, to protect the integrity of the media landscape.”

Dan Wootton Under Pressure as Controversy Mounts

The Ofcom investigation lands amid ongoing turbulence surrounding Dan Wootton, the show’s host. Wootton recently lost his MailOnline column following allegations published by the Byline Times — allegations he denies.

This latest incident adds fuel to the fire for GB News and its star presenter, raising questions about editorial standards and accountability on the network.
