Drunken Trio Nabbed After Stealing Boat to Watch Around the Island Race
Police and Coastguard Called to Seaview Yacht Club
Hampshire and Isle of Wight police teamed up with Bembridge Coastguard tonight at Seaview Yacht Club following a dramatic incident involving a stolen rigid inflatable boat (RIB).
The boat was reportedly nicked from Hayling Island — taken off a trailer without permission. The suspects sailed the boat over to the Isle of Wight, hoping to snag a prime spot for the upcoming Around the Island Race on Saturday.
Distress Call Sparks Rescue Operation
Drunken and poorly prepared, the trio soon found themselves in trouble when the vessel lost power. They had no lifejackets, flares, charts, or radio, and weren’t dressed for the sea conditions.
A passer-by on the distress channel heard their call for help and towed them to safety at Seaview. Meanwhile, the Ryde Inshore Rescue lifeboat was launched at the Coastguard’s request to assist.
Backlash from Coastguards: Safety First
Once docked, the crew were handed over to Hampshire Police at Hayling Island. Coastguards delivered a stern warning about the dangers of heading out to sea without adequate safety checks or proper equipment.
“Going to sea without lifejackets or radio is reckless and could have ended in tragedy,” said a coastguard spokesperson.
The trio are currently detained and cooperating with authorities, while the boat’s rightful ownership remains under investigation.
