IOPC Backs Met Over Controversial W2 Car Stop
IOPC Says No to Investigation
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has decided against launching a formal probe into a vehicle stop carried out by Metropolitan Police officers in W2.
Instead, the complaint has been handed back to the Met’s own Directorate of Professional Standards for further inquiry. The complainant has been informed of this decision.
What Really Happened During the Early-Morning Stop?
Armed officers were on a routine patrol just after 4am on Sunday, 14 August when they spotted a car heading east on the A40 Westway.
Suspecting the driver was texting behind the wheel, the officers signaled for the vehicle to pull over. When the driver failed to stop immediately, backup was called in.
Roughly five minutes later, the car came to a halt on Orsett Terrace in W2. The police explained the stop, and after a brief discussion, the driver was allowed to continue on their way.
Social Media Sparks Scrutiny
The Met confirmed it is aware of social media footage capturing part of the stop. Given the public interest, the force logged a formal complaint and voluntarily referred the matter to the IOPC.
Despite the viral spotlight, the IOPC concluded no investigation was necessary, leaving the Met to handle it internally.
