Crackdown on Dangerous HGVs: Overweight Trucks and Reckless Drivers Caught in South Yorkshire

Hidden Dangers Uncovered with Secret HGV Inspector

Thousands of lives are lost or shattered each year on UK roads, often due to avoidable vehicle faults or reckless driving. Commercial vehicles face strict laws to keep roads safe, yet too many break them.

South Yorkshire Police (SYP) teamed up with Highways England’s secret weapon—a disguised HGV tractor unit—to see inside tall vehicles like lorries and recovery trucks. This undercover approach exposed shocking road law breakers.

Weeklong Operation Nets Alarming Offence Rates

Between 15-19 March, SYP stopped 150 commercial vehicles during focused checks. They uncovered 120 offences, from dangerous overloading to drivers ignoring key safety rules.

“Some trucks were up to 43% overweight, severely impacting braking and handling,” explained Roads Policing Sergeant Bruce Yacomeni. “We even found vehicles with cracked windscreens, unsecured bonnets, and drivers dodging tachograph rules.”

Using the covert tractor unit, officers spotted 48 drivers without seat belts, 18 using phones behind the wheel, and 12 lacking proper control of their vehicles—all huge risks on busy roads.

Police Step Up Training to Tackle Road Risks

South Yorkshire’s Roads Policing Team is ramping up expertise with fresh training on dangerous goods transport and vehicle inspections. Sgt Yacomeni urged all drivers to follow simple, lifesaving rules:

  • Wear your seatbelt
  • Put phones away when driving
  • Stick to speed limits
  • Adhere to cargo weight and driving hour laws

“Falling asleep or reacting slowly behind the wheel can be deadly,” he warned.

Highways England Backs Police in Road Safety Drive

Sarah Watson-Quirk, Regional Road Safety Coordinator for Highways England, said: “Most people drive responsibly, but about 450 die or are seriously injured annually due to impairment or distraction on major roads. Our disguised lorry cabs help police catch the rule-breakers.”

Last week’s operation, dubbed Operation Tramline, sent a clear message: safe driving saves lives.
