Brighton Road Reopening After Royal Albion Safety Scare
The A259 King’s Road in Brighton is set to partially reopen on Monday morning following urgent safety work outside the Royal Albion Hotel. The road was shut last Friday after engineers warned the building and scaffold could collapse.
Since the closure, Britannia Hotels and their contractors have rushed in specialist gear to secure the area and prevent disaster.
Roadworks and Reopening Timeline
- Friday & Saturday: Removal of unstable scaffolding and demolition of dangerous building parts.
- Sunday: Road remains closed for the Brighton Half Marathon and final reopening prep.
- Monday: Southern section of the A259 reopens with contraflow traffic running both ways.
- Next Week: Full reopening planned as council teams up with Britannia Hotels.
Transport Boss Speaks Out
“We’ve been pushing Britannia and their contractors to get this work done quickly and safely,” said Councillor Trevor Muten, Cabinet Member for Transport, Parking, and Public Realm. “I’m glad the Brighton Half Marathon can go ahead as planned and that we’ll reopen the A259 early Monday. “I know this closure has caused delays, and I thank everyone for their patience. Public safety is our top priority.”
What This Means for Brighton
The A259 closure sparked hefty traffic jams along Brighton’s seafront, hitting commuters, local businesses, and event organisers hard.
The partial reopening on Monday should ease congestion while full access is restored. Drivers are urged to stay alert and plan extra time for journeys this week.
