16 Arrested in Chaos at Trafalgar Square Demo
Chaos erupted in central London today as 16 people were arrested during demonstrations in Trafalgar Square on Saturday, 26 September. The protests later spilled over towards Hyde Park, sparking clashes with police.
Offences Range from Virus Rule-Breaking to Violent Disorder
The arrests cover a slew of offences, including breaching Coronavirus regulations, assaulting police officers, public order offences, and violent disorder. Sadly, nine police officers were injured in the fracas, with two requiring hospital treatment for head injuries.
Police Step In as Crowds Refuse to Social Distance
Commander Ade Adelekan, who led today’s policing operation, blasted organisers for failing to manage safety measures. He said:
“As the crowds began to swell in Trafalgar Square, it became impossible for people to maintain social distancing and keep each other safe. Likewise, there appeared to be no efforts by organisers to engage with crowds and keep those assembling safe from transmitting the virus. This lack of action voided the risk assessment submitted by event organisers the night before. Therefore, today’s demonstration was no longer exempt from the Coronavirus regulations.”
Officers acted swiftly to disperse the crowds in the interest of public safety. “I am grateful to those members of the demonstration who listened to officers and went home,” added Adelekan.
Police Injuries Spark Concern After Weekend Violence
However, the operation turned ugly as a small minority of protestors clashed with police, resulting in nine injured officers. Adelekan expressed his frustration:
“This is especially saddening in light of the injuries sustained by officers last weekend. We will be supporting those officers who were injured and I wish them a very speedy recovery.”
The policing operation will continue into the evening, with warnings to the public to avoid large gatherings and maintain social distancing to keep everyone safe.
