Food Poisoning Scare at Lewes Prison: All Six Hospitalised Released
Six people taken to hospital after a food poisoning outbreak at Lewes Prison have all been discharged. The emergency unfolded on Thursday, 28th March 2024, triggering a major response.
Inmates and Staff Fall Ill
The victims include three prisoners and three staff members from the category B facility. They were rushed to Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton after falling sick just after midday.
Initial reports said at least ten people were affected inside the prison. The incident triggered a massive emergency response with eight ambulances, police, fire rescue teams, and a specialised CBRN unit all deployed.
Emergency Measures and False Alarms
Decontamination tents sprang up outside Eastbourne District General Hospital and Royal Sussex as a precaution. Though signs indicated Eastbourne’s closure, the hospital later confirmed it was fully open and ready to treat patients. All casualties were eventually sent to Brighton.
Early fears that two victims were in life-threatening condition proved unfounded. The Ministry of Justice also denied any involvement of drugs in the incident, quashing speculation.
Prison Kitchen Cleared, Probe Underway
The prison’s kitchen was locked down but has since reopened after safety checks. A Prison Service spokesperson confirmed they are working closely with emergency teams to manage the suspected food poisoning.
Sussex Police supported ambulance crews during the medical emergency and continue to assist with the ongoing investigation to pinpoint the cause. Thankfully, all affected are now home and in recovery.
