Stephen Lawrence’s Body to Be Brought Home After 31 Years
Stephen Lawrence’s remains will be returned from Jamaica to the UK, 31 years after his tragic, racially motivated murder, his mother Doreen Lawrence has revealed.
Family Distressed Over Social Media Images
Baroness Lawrence issued a heartfelt statement through her lawyer, explaining the decision follows the upsetting circulation of photos showing her son’s grave on social media after his body was exhumed.
“My family and I have been made aware of the recent images of my son’s grave that have been circulated on social media. Following Stephen’s passing, we laid him to rest in Jamaica believing he would find peace there. After 31 years, we’ve decided to bring Stephen home to be closer to us,” she said.
Outrage at Funeral Home’s Handling
The family expressed anger at the funeral home for their careless treatment, especially for leaving Stephen’s grave open to the public rather than securing it.
“The images were taken after the funeral home exhumed Stephen’s body. We are deeply distressed by their lack of regard for our feelings and privacy,” Baroness Lawrence stated.
She also condemned the person who posted the photos online without respect for the family’s grief.
“We are disheartened by the individual who posted the images without thinking of the impact on us. We hoped to do this sensitive work privately, but that wasn’t possible.”
Family Urges Respect and Privacy
The Lawrence family asks that all images be removed from social media and media outlets immediately.
“We apologise to anyone distressed by these images and kindly request their removal out of respect for our privacy,” Baroness Lawrence added.
“We ask the public to respect our privacy during this difficult time.”
Remembering Stephen Lawrence’s Impact
Stephen Lawrence was murdered in a racist attack in Eltham, southeast London, on April 22, 1993. His death sparked vital reforms in race relations and justice in the UK. Despite the 2012 convictions of two killers, the case remains a landmark in the fight against racism.
The Lawrence family’s decision to bring Stephen home highlights their lasting bond and hopes for peace. They plead for understanding and respect as they face this emotional chapter.
