Milwaukee cops shoot dead man near Republican National Convention site
Security under spotlight after assassination attempt on Trump
Police in Milwaukee have shot and killed a man close to the venue of the Republican National Convention, officials confirmed on Tuesday. The incident comes amid intense security scrutiny following an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania rally last Saturday.
Officers fired after man brandished knife
The officers involved were part of a police contingent from Columbus, Ohio, according to a union statement. They spotted the man carrying a knife while patrolling the area and opened fire when he turned towards them. Thankfully, none of the officers were injured in the encounter.
Victim was a known homeless local
Neighbours revealed the victim was a familiar face at a nearby homeless encampment. It remains unclear if the man was connected to the convention or intended to approach the event.
“Milwaukee has blood on its hands,” said state representative Ryan Clancy. “This is not near the RNC. The police should not be here.”
Thousands of officers join security efforts
Roughly 4,000 officers from across the nation are in Wisconsin to help police the convention. Columbus provided a specialised “police dialogue team” to manage demonstrations during the event.
