Melbourne Horror: One Dead, Five Hurt as Car Rams Pedestrians in CBD
Melbourne’s busy Central Business District was thrown into chaos yesterday as a car ploughed into a group of pedestrians, killing one and injuring five. The terrifying smash happened just after 6pm at the infamous intersection of Russell and Swanston Streets on Bourke Street.
Driver Caught After Carnage
The nightmare began when a white Toyota sedan slammed into three people waiting at a Swanston Street tram stop. Two sharp-eyed police officers close by quickly detained the 26-year-old driver, preventing further disaster.
Chain Reaction Crash
The Toyota didn’t stop there. It careered into two other vehicles – a Hyundai and a Mazda, the latter believed to be an Uber. Tragically, the Hyundai’s driver died at the scene. The Mazda’s occupants were rushed to hospital with injuries.
No Terror Link, Mental Health Probe Underway
Victoria Police have ruled out any terror-related motive. Superintendent Zorka Dunstan confirmed the driver is currently undergoing a mental health assessment, indicating possible personal issues behind the shocking attack.
“There is no ongoing threat to the community, and we will provide more information when available,” police assured.
Road Closures and Community Shock
Bourke Street remains closed from Swanston to Exhibition Streets as emergency crews continue their work. Witnesses describe the scene as “shocking” and the community is left reeling from the tragedy.
