12 Arrested After Violence Erupts at London Protests
Twelve people have been arrested amid ongoing demonstrations in central London. Most arrests were for public order offences, with one linked to criminal damage at the Cenotaph.
Peaceful Rally Turns Violent
The majority of protesters moved through London without incident. But a small faction sparked trouble, attacking officers and hurling glass bottles and fireworks. Eight police officers were injured in the clashes.
Police Respond to Disorder
“Regrettably officers were faced with further scenes of violence and disorder following a day of predominantly peaceful protest throughout the capital,” said Superintendent Jo Edwards.
“This is a hugely impassioned movement and we understand the public’s desire to have their voices heard – however it is not right that this passion has turned into violent attacks on officers.”
She praised the City of London Police and British Transport Police for their professionalism amid the chaos.
“Overnight our policing operation will continue and I would urge demonstrators thinking of returning to stay at home,” Edwards added.
“The threat of Coronavirus remains very real, and we need you to protect yourselves, your friends and your family.”
Warnings Issued Ahead of Further Action
Authorities remain on high alert as the protests continue. Police warn anyone considering further demonstrations to think twice and avoid any gatherings that could escalate tensions.
