Knife Crime Crackdown: 24 Arrested and 100+ Weapons Seized in Kent
Kent Police have made a major dent in knife crime, arresting 24 suspects and confiscating over 100 potential weapons during a week-long blitz. The operation ran from 13 to 19 November 2023 as part of the national Operation Sceptre, aimed at stamping out knife-carrying and weapon possession.
Stop and Search Hits Kent Hotspots
- Extra patrols and knife detectors were deployed across Kent towns.
- Parks and public spaces underwent thorough weapon sweeps.
- On 13 November, a suspicious vehicle in Deal yielded a knife and led to a man’s arrest.
- The next day, four arrests in Gillingham followed a disturbance involving three knives.
- A pub search in Gillingham on 17 November uncovered a knife and suspected drugs—another suspect was arrested.
- A police dog patrol in Canterbury found drugs on a man, who was then arrested for possession with intent to supply.
Working With Partners to Keep Kent Safe
Kent Police teamed up with British Transport Police at key railway stations, conducting 58 stop-and-searches. This resulted in three arrests and confiscation of a lock knife.
Officers also hit schools to warn children about the dangers of carrying knives and visited shops across Swale, Thanet, Canterbury, and other areas to prevent underage sales and theft of knives.
Police Stand Firm on Zero Tolerance
“We take a zero-tolerance approach to knives and weapons in our communities at all times,” said Superintendent Pete Steenhuis. “Operation Sceptre shines a spotlight on knife crime while educating youngsters about the risks.”
“Our officers work tirelessly to keep the public safe and tackle crime. I urge anyone carrying a knife to think about the serious consequences—for themselves and others.”
“The week’s proactive policing showed strong results, and I’m proud Kent could support this vital campaign.”
