Drama on Isle of Wight Cliff: Two Men Rescued After Getting Stuck 150 Feet Up

Emergency Services Rush to Culver Down Cliff Rescue

Emergency crews were scrambled to Culver Down on the Isle of Wight this Monday evening after two men got stuck on a cliff face about 150 feet high. Rescue teams from the Coastguard, Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue, and the Sandown lifeboat were all deployed to the scene.

Bembridge Coastguard Search and Rescue were already on a training exercise nearby when the distress call came in. A Coastguard Rescue helicopter from Lee-on-the-Solent, along with several fire engines and an aerial ladder, responded immediately.

Helicopter Winches Men to Safety

The two men, one a local in his twenties and the other a visitor, were successfully winched to safety by helicopter. Neither was injured. They had contacted police after getting into trouble on the cliff face.

Both are now safely reunited with relatives. Rescue crews are urging the public to be extra cautious around cliffs — especially at this time of year when scenic walks can quickly turn dangerous.

Rescue Teams Warn Against Reckless Cliff Climbing

“Cliffs are not a playground,” a Coastguard spokesperson said. “Inexperienced climbers jeopardise not only their own lives but also those of firefighters and rescuers called to save them.”
