Gas Scare at Birmingham Sainsbury’s Sends Shoppers Scrambling

Chaos erupted at Sainsbury’s on Longbridge Lane this morning as shoppers and staff were evacuated over sudden respiratory issues.

Seven Treated Amid Respiratory Worries

West Midlands Ambulance Service raced to the scene at 9.53am after multiple people complained of breathing trouble inside the supermarket. Paramedics, including the Hazardous Area Response Team, and police and fire crews quickly joined the emergency response.

Seven patients were assessed by ambulance crews. Two women were treated on the spot before being rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham for further checks. The other five were discharged at the scene after receiving care.

Worried Shoppers Given Reassurance

Several other customers described as “worried but well” were given advice by emergency medics. Sainsbury’s and nearby buildings were evacuated swiftly and safely, thanks to teamwork between emergency services and retail staff.

Investigation Underway

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “This was a well-managed tri-service response which saw the safe and speedy evacuation of a large number of people. Investigations into the cause of the incident continue.”
