Predator Caught After 5 Years on the Run

Shahid Hussain, 48, a Pakistani national from Tinsley, Rotherham, has been jailed for indecent assault and will be deported after serving his sentence. The 21-year-old attack came to light thanks to Operation Stovewood, the National Crime Agency’s probe into historic child abuse in Rotherham.

Groomed Victim at Just 14

Hussain, nicknamed “Shammy” by his victim, targeted a 14-year-old girl at a local shopping centre. He groomed her with gifts, alcohol, and car rides. One chilling night, he drove the girl, her friend, and another man to a dark spot in Rotherham. Hussain separated the girl and sexually assaulted her when she refused his demands.

Five Years on the Run Before Capture

Hussain was arrested after the victim came forward years later. But after being charged in 2018, he skipped bail and vanished. The NCA tracked him down with a European Arrest Warrant. Bulgarian police caught him in November 2023 trying to enter Bulgaria from Turkey. He was extradited back to the UK and jailed.

Justice Served, Victim Praised

“I’m pleased that Hussain has finally faced justice for the crime he committed 21 years ago,” said NCA Senior Investigating Officer Stuart Cobb. “This case shows the NCA’s commitment to victims of child abuse. I commend the victim for her courage throughout the long prosecution.”

Martin McRobb, CPS Specialist Prosecutor, added: “Hussain tried to dodge the law by fleeing abroad. His conviction sends a clear message: sex offenders won’t escape justice. We will work with international partners to bring them back.”

Ongoing Fight Against Rotherham Abuse

Operation Stovewood is the largest investigation into historic abuse in Rotherham, covering incidents from 1997 to 2013. Over 1,100 victims have been identified, with 37 convicted offenders, including Hussain. More than 50 investigations are still active.

If you or someone you know suffered child sexual abuse, report it to the police by calling 101 or visiting a police station. Trained officers are ready to help and support victims.
