UK Grits Teeth as Freezing Fog and Sub-Zero Blast Set to Bite

Amber Cold-Health Alert Issued

The UK is bracing for a harsh cold snap with freezing fog and plummeting temperatures expected to slam the nation. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and the Met Office have sounded the alarm, declaring an amber Cold-Health Alert for the North West, North East, and Yorkshire and the Humber.

Freezing Weather to Grip UK Until Early December

The alert kicked in at 6pm on Tuesday, November 28, and will stay in place until midday Tuesday, December 5. Across the UK, temperatures could dive to a bone-chilling minus eight degrees Celsius, bringing frost, snow, and icy dangers.

Wintry Showers and Fog to Make Life Miserable

  • Frost will spread overnight, creating slippery surfaces.
  • Snow showers to hit the Moors and southwest England.
  • Freezing fog patches will complicate travel, especially along coasts.

A Met Office spokesperson warned: “Frost is developing through 1 evening, becoming widespread overnight. Icy stretches will persist as snow showers continue, accompanied by patchy freezing conditions across the southwest of England, turning to snow over the Moors.”

Weekend – Cold but Some Sun

Friday to Sunday will remain chilly with wintry showers mostly on the coasts, but some sunny spells are expected on Saturday. Overnight frosts and fog patches will linger, making mornings harsh and roads treacherous.

Milder Weather on Horizon, But Brief

By late week, things may warm up a touch with cloud and wind bringing rain. Yet, this respite is short-lived as cold snaps with frosts and fog could return amid unsettled conditions.

As the UK shivers through this icy blast, experts urge everyone to wrap up, check on vulnerable neighbours, and take care on the roads.
