Eight Stranded After Rockfall on Isle of Wight Cliffs

The UK Coastguard launched a major rescue operation after eight people were trapped by a sudden rockfall at Shanklin, Isle of Wight. The incident was reported around 4.40pm on 18 April, sparking fears some might be injured or buried under debris.

Multi-Agency Rescue Teams Rush to Scene

Bembridge and Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Teams scrambled to the location, joined by Isle of Wight 1 Rescue Service and The Sandown and Shanklin Independent Lifeboat. A Coastguard helicopter from Lee-on-Solent was also deployed, with support from Hampshire Police and Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.

No Injuries as Walkers Rescued Safely

The eight people were split into two separate walking groups and were rescued using strict social distancing measures. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

“There is nothing to suggest these two separate groups were breaking lockdown rules,” said David Hurden, Senior Maritime Operations Officer for HM Coastguard. “They were socially distancing on a walk near their homes. We’re thankful no one was hurt and that they called 999 to alert the Coastguard.”
