A devastating crash near Wakefield has turned 11-year-old Poppie Morgan-Roller into an orphan. Her parents, Shane Roller and Shannen Morgan, along with her two younger sisters, lost their lives in a catastrophic collision on Sunday. Poppie, who stayed at a friend’s house that day, was spared from the horror.
Family’s Car Collided Head-On and Burst Into Flames
The family’s car smashed head-on into a motorcycle and caught fire instantly. Witnesses have been sought as emergency crews arrived on the scene. The tragedy has shocked the local community and left them reeling.
“We were just settling down for Sunday dinner when the emergency call came in. It was a shock that turned our quiet afternoon into a nightmare,” said Paul Hepple, a close family friend.
Community Rallies, Raising Over £200,000 for Poppie
Paul Hepple launched a GoFundMe to support Poppie’s future, covering her living costs, education, and counselling. Within hours, over 12,600 people donated more than £200,000, showing incredible community support.
“Poppie will live with her auntie, who is now her legal guardian,” Hepple confirmed. “All donations will go directly to Poppie’s well-being and may also help with funeral costs.”
School and Friends Mourn Lost Sisters
Athersley North Primary, where Poppie’s sisters Rubie and Lillie were pupils, paid tribute to the girls. “Rubie was bright and caring, admired by peers, while Lillie was creative and joyful. Their loss is felt deeply by all of us,” the school said.
The crash site on the A61 has turned into a shrine, with tributes and flowers piling up as the community mourns.
Jamie Phillips, family friend, said: “They were well-loved and part of every community event. It’s unimaginable that they’re gone.”
Police Support Orphaned Girl Amid Ongoing Investigation
Superintendent Alan Travis of Wakefield District Police said: “This tragedy has taken six lives and left a young girl without her family. Our focus is now on supporting Poppie through this unimaginable loss.”
The A61 remains closed while investigations continue. The Wakefield community stands united, offering love and support as Poppie faces a heartbreaking future without her family.
