Weston-super-Mare on High Alert After Chemical Arrest
Four Streets Sealed Off as Police Launch Major Operation
Weston-super-Mare town centre is in lockdown tonight after police set up a large armed cordon around four streets. The dramatic move comes after a bomb-related arrest linked to hazardous chemicals found in a flat on Baker Street.
Residents inside the cordoned zone are barred from returning to their homes. Others nearby have been told to stay indoors with doors locked as officers work urgently at the scene.
Emergency Services Swarm the Area
Police, fire crews, and ambulances have flooded the scene. An incident command centre has been set up in Locking Road car park to coordinate the response. Eyewitnesses and locals have taken to social media to share updates, speculating about bomb-making materials.
Police Deny Bomb Disposal Unit Called In
An Avon and Somerset Constabulary spokesperson hit back at rumours of armed police and bomb disposal units being deployed. They confirmed: “At approximately 5.25pm today (July 1), we were made aware of potentially unstable chemicals found at an address on Baker Street.”
The statement continued: “As a precaution, a cordon was established while specialist fire service officers assessed the scene before declaring it safe. A 49-year-old man was arrested and is currently assisting us with our enquiries. There is no intelligence to suggest this incident is terrorist-related.”
