Deputy Chief Constable Craig Dibdin has released a statement addressing the incident and outlining the measures taken by authorities. He explained that the response was a precaution following initial concerns about a potential security breach.
“Yesterday evening, we responded to a report of a possible security breach at Police Headquarters Devizes. Whilst we were developing the information, several precautionary steps were taken to ensure the immediate safety of those on the HQ site, including the enactment of our security procedures and the deployment of armed officers,” said DCC Dibdin.
As further information came to light, police were able to determine that no security breach had occurred. The individual who made the report was located at their home and was experiencing a medical episode. It was confirmed that there was no malicious intent behind the communication.
DCC Dibdin added: “As per standard practice, we are taking the opportunity to review our procedures and response to this incident. At no point was there any threat to the public, officers, or HQ staff.”
Police have confirmed that the safety of all staff and members of the public was the priority, and the evacuation and subsequent search of the HQ were conducted swiftly. The incident has prompted a procedural review to ensure continued security at the facility.
