Silent 999 Calls: How to Get Help Without Speaking
If you’re in danger and can’t speak, don’t panic. Call 999 and try to whisper to the operator. Even quiet sounds count. You might be asked to cough or tap phone keys to answer questions.
Calling 999 from a Mobile? Use the Life-Saving ‘Press 55’ Trick
Can’t talk? When prompted during a 999 call on your mobile, press 55. This sends your call straight to the police. But beware – it only works on mobiles and won’t let officers track your location.
If you don’t press 55, your call will hang up automatically.
Calling 999 from a Landline? Police Can Track You
On landlines, if you don’t speak but there’s background noise, the operator will switch your call to the police automatically. Even if you hang up, the line stays open for 45 seconds in case you pick up again.
Unlike mobiles, landline calls give police your location right away. This could be crucial if you can’t speak.
Remember:
- Whisper or make noise to alert the operator.
- Press 55 on mobile when prompted to reach police silently.
- Landline calls give instant location tracking; mobiles do not.
- Stay calm – help is on the way.
