BBC iPlayer Ends Downloads on Windows and Mac Devices
From today, March 11, BBC iPlayer users can no longer download shows or films onto Windows 10, Windows 11, or Mac laptops and desktops. This major shake-up means offline viewing on these devices is dead in the water.
Which Devices Are Hit?
- Windows 10 PCs
- Windows 11 PCs
- MacBook Pro
- MacBook Air
- All MacBooks
The BBC had warned users that its Desktop Downloads App would be shutting down. As of now, you can’t download any new content on computers or laptops via BBC iPlayer. However, any shows already downloaded remain available until April 8, 2024.
Mobile Users Still in the Clear
If you’re using a mobile device like an iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, or an iPad, you’re still good to go. Downloads are fully supported on smartphones and tablets, and you can keep adding programs to your Watchlist for later binging.
Key Dates to Remember
- Feb 2: BBC blocked the iPlayer app on affected devices.
- Mar 11: Download feature scrapped for Windows and Mac laptops/desktops.
- Apr 8: Full BBC iPlayer functionality ends on those devices.
The change reflects shifting streaming tech and how viewers consume content. While other platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney Plus keep download options, BBC iPlayer is adapting its service to evolving user habits.
