A 20-year-old man who slammed through a red light at nearly three times the speed limit and fled after killing a delivery driver in Lambeth has been handed a lengthy prison sentence.

Crash Details: BMW Hits Delivery Rider at High Speed

Abdirahman Ahmed, from Lilford Road, appeared at Croydon Crown Court on Thursday, 3 August. The court heard that on 11 May, at around 8.15pm, Ahmed’s BMW was racing between 55 and 60mph in a 20mph zone on Leigham Court Road, Streatham.

He ran a red light and crashed into 44-year-old Ronaldo de Oliveira, who was out delivering parcels on his moped. The car flipped onto its side at Knollys Road, but Ahmed jumped out and fled the scene.

Justice Delivered: Guilty Plea Cuts Sentence

Emergency services rushed to the scene, but tragically, Ronaldo was pronounced dead. Ahmed was later identified after Met Police forensic experts matched his DNA from the BMW’s airbag.

Ahmed was sentenced to 13 years for causing death by dangerous driving, plus 18 months for driving while unlicensed and uninsured. His driving disqualification will last seven years, extended by another six and a half. Thanks to an early guilty plea, his prison term was slashed to nine years and nine months.

This sentencing sends a powerful message against reckless driving and leaving the scene of fatal crashes.
