London Gears Up for High-Tension PSC March and Counter-Protest
Police prepare for a weekend of protests in central London as the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) holds its latest march, opposed by the counter-group Enough is Enough.
Heavy Police Presence Across London
The Metropolitan Police Corps will be on high alert this Saturday. Officers will manage the PSC’s 18th protest since October 2023 alongside the Enough is Enough counter-demo. They will also provide security for the annual Trooping the Colour event at Horse Guards Parade and continue neighbourhood patrols throughout the capital.
The Met acknowledges the strain ongoing protests have placed on local communities, especially London’s Jewish residents. Their priority is to safeguard lawful protest rights while limiting disruption and avoiding serious disorder, which is the only legal reason to ban a protest.
Plans and Conditions Set to Minimise Chaos
After talks with both protest groups, religious leaders from Jewish and Muslim communities, and local businesses, police have imposed strict rules on the demonstrations. These include set start points, times, routes, and limits on assembly locations to reduce disruption.
- The PSC march will assemble at Russell Square, WC1, until 1:30pm before moving via Southampton Row, Kingsway, Aldwych, through to Parliament Square.
- Enough is Enough organisers will gather on the Strand near Milford Lane after 12:30pm.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Andy Valentine, leading the operation, said:
“Everyone in London has a right to protest, but we must also respect the right of Londoners to live their daily lives without fear or serious disruption.”
“We urge all participants to protest calmly and within the law to avoid conflict.”
“The conditions in place aim to balance free expression with public safety during what is one of the most intense periods of public order policing we’ve seen since October.”
What You Need to Know: Conditions Imposed
Police are using powers under the Public Order Act 1986 to control protest details:
- PSC March: The rally must end by 5pm, with all participants dispersed by 6pm.
- Enough is Enough Counter-Protest: Attendees must stay within the designated area on the Strand.
These conditions let police regulate protest size, duration, and routes, especially near sensitive sites and communities on edge.
Londoners Brace for Potential Disruption
The Met warns the public to expect disruption but promises swift action against any unlawful behaviour. With protests running consecutively since October, officers remain vigilant to keep the peace while upholding democratic rights.
