The UK is set to experience a shift in weather patterns this weekend as warm and humid air from the southeast could lead to the development of thunderstorms later on Saturday and continuing through Sunday.
Saturday’s Weather:
After a chilly start, Saturday will bring fine and dry conditions for most of the UK, with plenty of sunshine. However, increasing cloud cover is expected across the southern regions, bringing the possibility of showers in southern England for a brief period.
Sunday’s Weather Outlook:
A more significant change in weather is expected overnight on Saturday into Sunday. Showers and isolated thunderstorms are predicted to develop across parts of southern England on Saturday night. By Sunday morning, the risk of more active and organized heavy showers and thunderstorms increases, particularly in southern England.
Thunderstorm Warning Issued:
The Met Office has issued a Yellow severe weather warning for thunderstorms on Sunday, covering a large area of England and parts of eastern Wales. While many areas may not be affected, there is a possibility of intense rainfall if thunderstorms do develop. Rainfall of 30 to 40mm could fall in less than an hour, with over 75mm possible in some areas, potentially leading to localized flooding and disruption.
Met Office Statement:
Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Dan Harris said, “Through Saturday night and into Sunday we’ll see a gradual change in our weather across the UK with an increasing chance of heavy thundery showers developing, particularly across central parts of the UK. Should they develop, there is the risk of some local disruption from intense rainfall, gusty winds, lightning, and possibly hail. However, not everywhere within the warning area will see thunderstorms, and confidence in any individual location being affected remains extremely low at this time.”
He also advised, “The risk of thunderstorms will steadily move northwards through Sunday afternoon and into the early evening. If you have plans for Sunday, I’d recommend keeping up to date with the Met Office forecast and any updates to the warnings.
Looking Ahead:
As high pressure shifts eastward through the weekend, the weather next week is expected to become more unsettled, with spells of rain, showers, and more cloudy conditions than seen recently.
Residents are advised to stay informed about weather updates and prepare for possible disruptions due to the forecasted thunderstorms.
