Sutton Valence Bomb Hoaxer Locked Up for 22 Months

A man who sparked a bomb scare after the 2017 terror attacks has been jailed for nearly two years. Christopher Haw, 25, from Sutton Road, Sutton Valence, called 999 claiming he had a firearm and explosives and threatened to kill people.

Weapon Threats Spark Police Panic

On the evening of July 8, 2017, kent-police/" title="Kent Police" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Kent Police were alerted by ambulance services after Haw said he was armed with bombs and a gun. He even dared armed officers to “bring it on.”

A quick chat with a family member revealed he had no weapons but was drinking, taking drugs, and acting violently.

Gun Gestures and Spitting at Officers

When police arrived, Haw opened the door and made a gun gesture aimed at an officer’s head. He also spat at another officer before being arrested.

Bomb Hoax and Assault Charges Lead to Jail

Despite claiming his bomb threats were lies and apologising, a search of Haw’s home uncovered materials that could be used to build explosives. He pleaded guilty to making a bomb hoax and assaulting a police officer.

Sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court on May 18, 2018, Haw was locked up for 22 months. He’s been in custody since his arrest last July.

Detective Sergeant Dan Barker said: “Christopher Haw has expressed remorse and clearly has his issues, but that’s no excuse for his behaviour.”

“This was a reckless waste of police resources and could have stopped help reaching a real emergency.”

“The materials found at his home were seriously worrying. While Haw denies any intent to use them, they could have been combined to make a bomb. That’s simply unacceptable.”

“I hope he uses this time to face up to his problems and never repeats this dangerous behaviour.”
