96-Year-Old Woman Pleads Guilty to Dangerous Driving Death
A 96-year-old driver has admitted causing death by dangerous driving after mounting a pavement and hitting two pedestrians, killing one of them.
Tragic Crash in Formby
June Mills, from Ainsdale, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court on Tuesday, where she pled guilty to the death of 76-year-old Brenda Joyce. The fatal collision happened on August 2, 2023, on Elbow Lane, Formby.
Court heard Mills lost control of her Vauxhall Corsa after pressing the accelerator too hard. The car veered onto the pavement, striking Brenda Joyce and another 80-year-old woman. Brenda suffered a serious head injury and died at the scene, while the second pedestrian sustained minor injuries.
Defence Highlights Age and Health Issues
Defence lawyer Tom Gent told the court that Mills, once of good character, now has significantly reduced mobility and poor health. “The accelerator pedal fell beneath her foot, and she panicked and failed to react,” Gent explained. “She accepts by her plea that her driving fell far below the expected standard.”
Community in Shock, Calls for Elderly Driver Review
The crash has deeply affected the local community. Merseyside Police confirmed emergency services quickly responded to the scene. Brenda Joyce’s family expressed devastation and urged for tougher road safety policies targeting elderly drivers.
Recorder Andrew Menary KC adjourned sentencing until September 30. Mills will remain out of custody until then. The case has fuelled debate over the safety and legal responsibilities of elderly motorists on UK roads.
