James Markham, 45, was fatally stabbed on 9 August after confronting a gang of youths shouting at his daughter outside their home in Chingford.
Teenager Charged Over Deadly Attack
The suspect, a teenager, appeared via video link on Tuesday. He is charged with murder and possessing a knife in public.
The youth spoke only to confirm his name and age during the brief court appearance.
Details of the Fatal Stabbing Revealed
Court heard Mr Markham suffered two stab wounds: a fatal one to the left-hand side and another to his neck.
The teen is also charged with breaching a criminal behaviour order (CBO) and remains in youth detention ahead of a plea hearing set for 2 November.
