Speeding Scooter Chase Ends in Dramatic Lewisham Arrest

At around 3.45pm on Saturday, November 8, Met Police’s Operation Venice team teamed up with unmarked officers from the Violent Crime Taskforce (VCTF) in Lewisham Town Centre. They spotted a suspicious scooter rider on a stolen bike, kicking off a high-speed pursuit that brought chaos to the streets.

Stolen Scooter Flees at Speed – Then Crashes

  • A check revealed the scooter was stolen just last month from a local car park.
  • As the rider sped down Lewisham High Street, police gave chase with blue lights flashing.
  • The suspect raced the wrong way on Rennell Street, shot through a red light, then lost control trying to mount the pavement.
  • He crashed into a signpost before dashing off on foot down Limes Grove, with officers in hot pursuit.

Public Hero Helps Police Nab Armed Suspect

The rider was caught thanks to a quick-thinking member of the public who helped pin him down until officers arrived. The suspect was locked up on multiple charges including:

  • Failing to stop for police
  • Aggravated taking and driving away
  • Supplying cannabis
  • Two counts of possession of offensive weapons
  • Also wanted for failing to appear in court in Birmingham

Police Praise Public Help, Warn Against Dangerous Weapons

“I want to thank the person who helped detain this male for his brave actions,” said Police Sergeant Tony McGovern. “If he hadn’t stepped in, the suspect might have escaped with two more deadly knives on our streets.”

“There’s simply no need for anyone, young or old, to carry weapons like these. In all my years policing, I’ve rarely seen anything that looks like a sword.”

“This is an excellent piece of policing that has taken a dangerous individual off the streets.”

“Operation Venice officers always pursue moped and scooter offenders when it’s safe. We have the tools and tactics to cut down moped-enabled crime, but the public can do their bit too.”

“If you own a moped, motorbike or scooter, please follow our ‘Lock, Chain and Cover’ advice to keep your vehicle secure and stop crooks from exploiting them.”
