Speeding Driver Jailed for Tragic Hit-and-Run Fatality
At around 11pm on August 17, 2019, 21-year-old Callum Richardson from Moulton, Northampton, was driving his Ford Fiesta at 48mph — well over the speed limit — when he fatally struck 47-year-old pedestrian Salem Lufti on Wellingborough Road, Northampton.
Richardson initially told police that Mr Lufti “suddenly walked out in front of him.” But investigators uncovered the harsh truth: Richardson was driving dangerously fast and didn’t even brake until after the crash.
Three Years Behind Bars for Reckless Driver
Yesterday at Northampton Crown Court, Richardson was sentenced to three years in prison. Lead Investigator DC Ady Tredwell said, “There is no sentence in this world that can ever make up for the loss of Salem Lufti.”
He added how the court was deeply moved by the victim impact statement from Mr Lufti’s widow, who described the unbearable pain endured by herself and their two young children.
Family Left Devastated by Fatal Crash
“It was especially heartbreaking to hear that Salem’s son tried calling and texting his dad after the crash, desperately begging him to come back,” said DC Tredwell. “Only weeks before, their youngest child was born.”
“Callum Richardson must grasp the full weight of his actions — two children will grow up without their father, and a wife has lost her soulmate. He can never undo this tragedy and must live with the consequences for life.”
“This investigation has been long and complex. I hope Salem’s widow finds some comfort in today’s verdict and that justice has been served. My thoughts remain with her and the family.”
