East London man caught trying to buy grenade after hoarding terror bomb manuals
Mohammed Chowdhury admits terror offences
Mohammed Chowdhury from Bethnal Green, East London, pleaded guilty on 18 November to four counts of possessing documents likely to aid terrorism under the Terrorism Act 2000. Today, 10 February, he was also found guilty of attempting to possess an explosive with intent to endanger life or property, under the Explosives Substance Act 1883.
Downloaded bomb manuals and tried to buy grenade
Commander Richard Smith of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command said: “Chowdhury downloaded extremely concerning manuals detailing how to make explosives and lethal weapons. Even worse, he made serious attempts to get hold of a hand grenade.”
“These are very serious crimes. Thanks to this investigation, the public is undoubtedly safer.”
Chowdhury arrested after plot uncovered
Police arrested Chowdhury in February 2020 after uncovering his attempt to buy a grenade. Seizing his digital devices, detectives found chilling evidence: instructions on how to create explosives and devices downloaded to his phone, alongside handwritten notes with chemical recipes and diagrams.
He was charged with attempting to possess a grenade and possession of terror-related documents. Chowdhury pleaded guilty to document possession and was convicted of trying to buy the grenade after trial. He faces sentencing on 23 March.
Public urged to stay vigilant
Commander Smith warned: “The terror threat remains real. We urge everyone to report anything suspicious, no matter how small. It’s better to let us check it out.”
