Man Found Guilty of Murdering Woman in Sheffield
David Bestwick, from Chesterfield Road, Sheffield, has been found guilty of murdering Maria following a harrowing trial at Sheffield Crown Court.
Horror Attack in Early Hours
In the early hours of Sunday 6 September 2020, emergency services were called to School Lane, Greenhill, after reports of a woman being assaulted. Paramedics found Maria with life-threatening injuries and rushed her to hospital. Despite their efforts, she tragically died two days later.
Bestwick’s Call to Police Sealed His Fate
Shockingly, Bestwick himself called the police in the early hours claiming he had strangled Maria. Officers arrested him at the scene and charged him initially with attempted murder. After Maria’s death, the charge was upgraded to murder.
“Bestwick now faces a considerable period behind bars for this serious crime,” said Detective Chief Inspector James Axe. “He has refused to accept responsibility, forcing Maria’s family to endure a distressing trial. Our thoughts remain with Maria’s loved ones on this difficult day.”
Justice Pending
Bestwick is due to be sentenced on Monday 1 March. Police praised the officers who secured vital evidence and worked tirelessly over the last five months to bring justice for Maria.
