Shopping Centre Evacuated as Blaze Tears Through Zizzi’s in Camberley
Chaos erupted at the Atrium Shopping Centre in Camberley today as a fierce fire ripped through the popular Zizzi’s Italian restaurant. Surrey Fire and Rescue teams were called to the scene this lunchtime to tackle the raging blaze.
Fire Starts in Ventilation System, Spreads to Roof
The fire is believed to have started in the restaurant’s ventilation system before quickly spreading to the roof. Firefighters pumped water from multiple hose reels in a bid to control the flames. A large cordon was set up by Surrey Police while the entire Atrium Shopping Centre was evacuated for public safety.
Massive Fire Response From Surrey and Hampshire Crews
Multiple fire crews from Camberley, Farnham, Egham, as well as an aerial ladder platform and support vehicles joined the fight. Assistance also came from neighbouring Hampshire’s fire teams to help contain the blaze.
An estimated five pumping appliances and the aerial ladder were deployed. Thankfully, at this stage, no injuries have been reported.
Fire Extinguished, Emergency Crews Refreshed
Firefighters confirmed the roof fire is now under control and extinguished. Nearby Pizza Express generously provided refreshments to the exhausted emergency responders after their long battle against the flames.
The popular Zizzi’s chain was recently in the spotlight after a former spy and his daughter fell ill at their Salisbury venue. Today’s fiery incident adds another twist to the restaurant group’s recent troubles.
